Protein matters especially as we age. For adults 50 and over, it's recommended 1.0 - 1.2 grams daily per kilogram of body weight. For me that's around 100 grams every day.
It's not easy to meet that goal, but I definitely focus on it for the following reasons. Protein matters, because it:
- Preserves muscle: We naturally lose muscle mass with age. Sufficient protein, especially when combined with resistance exercise, helps to slow down the loss.
- Supports strength and mobility: Stronger muscles help support bones and joints such as walking, climbing stairs, and makes getting up from a chair easier as we age.
- Helps maintain metabolism: Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Maintaining muscle helps support a health metabolic rate.
- Keeps you fuller longer: Protein tends to increase satiety, which can make it easier to manage portions and reduce snacking between meals.
- Supports recovery and repair: Protein provides amino acids needed to repair tissues and maintain many essential body functions.
- Supports immune function: Antibodies and other immune components rely on amino acides.
- Helps maintain independence as we age: Maintaining muscle and strength isn't just about appearance. It's about staying active, strong and independent!
